Preperation and Process
Before blasting work, steam cleaning is essential to remove salts oil and general contaminants. Once blasted, a full check is carried out for rust damage, broken welds or fitting.
After careful preparation and paying attention to detail, powder coating can match most wet paints on items. Our products are impervious to oil grease, brake fluid, road salt, and most corrosive chemicals. Resistant to stone chipping and very flexible. Highly recommended for any motorcycle part.
We take great care in preparing frames and parts for coating. Steel frames are dipped in an alkaline paint remover, cleaned, then masked off in sensitive areas and lightly blasted to remove all remaining paint and corrosion, resulting in an optimal surface for the primer or first coating.
For aluminium or alloy frames, we use bead blasting, which is less aggressive but still provides an excellent surface for the primer coat. After the blasting stage, we visually inspect the work for any damage, such as cracks or poorly welded joints. We repair any corrosion damage using high-temperature metal fillers or welding, if necessary. There may be an additional charge for these repairs (subject to agreement), but this ensures a proper finish before the coating work begins.
We can optionally place the frames and parts into our phosphating and wash plant for thorough deep cleaning and additional corrosion protection. The phosphating process etches into the surface, providing longer-lasting durability. This optional service incurs an extra charge but extends our warranty to fifteen years (subject to terms and conditions). The average additional cost is around £45.00 for the frame & swing arm.
Next, we apply a self-healing epoxy-polyester primer coat, averaging 50 microns per coat depending on your chosen level. After semi-curing, we use your selected colour coat and fully cure it at 180 degrees Celsius, ensuring that both the primer and topcoat bond effectively. At this stage, we can add a clear coat or a unique effect lacquer coat as desired.
For an enhanced finish, we also offer an additional acrylic lacquer for a deep lustre finish, or a matte or semi-matte finish as optional extras.
For pricing information, please email us with a list of the parts, photographs, and any known damage that may require additional work. This helps us assess the project's scope and provide a cost estimate.

Motorcycle Frames
A phosphate deep cleaning service for Motorcycle Frames will be provided following proprietary blast cleaning. This offers enhanced protection for all frames and swingarms designated for powder coating,
With careful preparation and attention to detail, our powder coating achieves a finish that can match most wet paints. Where it truly surpasses wet paint is in its superior durability: it is highly flexible, resistant to stone chipping, and completely impervious to oil, grease, brake fluid, road salt, and most corrosive chemicals.
Our diverse range of colours and finishes
Our extensive selection of colours and finishes includes flip, pearlescent, special effect lacquers, candy colours, and glow-in-the-dark options. Additionally, we can custom-match any colour in two-pack or water-based automotive finishes.
Here at MSB we offer a wide range of flip colours.
This example after prep work had a base anti corrosive powder coat primer applied, followed by a water base colour coat & finished in a diamond clear powder coat lacquer.

Durable services for motorcycle frames
Our powder coating process is highly chip-resistant, providing a finish superior to stove or wet paint options. While some providers offer cheaper services, we never compromise on quality. We back our professional work with a guarantee of up to fifteen years, which includes a standard five-year anti-corrosion guarantee (subject to condition).
For purists, we've discovered that applying a gloss powder coat followed by an acrylic crystal precise powder coat lacquer results in a finish hard to distinguish from stove enamelling.

Our Various Coating Options
Wet paints are recommended for specific items such as petrol tanks, mudguards, and side casings, though powder coating is also an option. Please note that E10 fuel can damage powder coat finishes. Additionally, fibreglass, carbon fibre, and plastic parts cannot be powder-coated, but we can coat them with ceramic paints (Cerakote). We now offer Cerakote finishes for all motorcycle parts, including high-temperature exhaust systems, and clear coats that protect against fuel damage over powder coat surfaces.

Powder Coated Motorcycle Wheels
Work procedure for all alloy motorcycle and care rims.
We will never use corrosive chemicals or acids during the cleaning stage. This can lead to damaging effects.
Cleaning and Prep Work
Subject to the alloy makeup, we will choose the best blasting media for the cleaning. The prep work must be carried out to a high standard, leaving the rims clean, free of all paints and contaminants. It is worth noting that the entire rim is cleaned, not just the surfaces you see.
Safety check, once blasted we look closely at each rim and check for any cracks. This is only a visual check and is normally sufficient. However, there is always a very small chance of micro-cracks that can't be seen with a visual inspection.
Damaged alloys such as kerb rash can be repaired at extra costs. Badly damaged alloys can be dangerous, and we do not recommend them to be repaired as any micro cracks not picked up or poorly repaired could lead to failure and devastating consequences.
Pre-heating (de-gassing) some lower-cost or corroded alloys can be porous and may have trapped air/gasses within the casting matrix.
Once the cleaning and degassing have been completed, we normally apply an anti-corrosive base powder coat (depending on the final coating). See this link for information. Powder Coating Interpon Akzonobel.
The correct curing of the base coat is essential; we deliberately under-cure the primer coat so that when the finish colour coat is applied and fully cured, both coats cross bond, offering a strong, reliable, long-lasting finish.
Steel Rims
The procedure for steel rims is exactly the same as alloys, although without degassing.
In the case of all magnesium rims, we take a completely different approach in how we clean and coat. We will carefully bead blast clean as this is a gentle method. The finish preferred is either a base wet paint & colour coat or an air-cure Ceramic coat.
