Our Automotive Powder Coating Service
- The material governs the approach we take on the first stage preparation.
- We do not apply naked flames to strip off paint or decals as some do, this can give rise to local distortion with disastrous results.
- Steel work will be blast cleaned to remove all remaining paintwork and allow for a first class key for primer coating.
- For underbody parts after blasting, we recommend that the Plascoat products should utilised. Although standard polyesters will do a fine and pleasing finish.
- For parts that are on show such as rocker covers or general engine parts, we would recommend standard polyester powders, as there is a large range of colours and finishes available.
Preparation work for ‘Vehicle Restoration'
All parts will be blast cleaned and have a self-healing primer applied and semi cured a polyester coat then applied to the primer, this is normally done whilst the work is still hot from the fist stage, this allows better adhesion and promotes further coverage in the hard to reach places as joints and corners.
Repair work
General repair work can be carried out in-house or if it requires work that is out of our skill range for instance structural welding then it is taken to a local highly skilled engineering company.
Safety First
If a wheel has been damaged and looks as though it is beyond repair then it probably is. It's okay to carry out minor repairs such as kerb damage or slight chips etc; but please be aware that a repair after heavy impact damage is not recommended for your safety and that of others. Often hair line cracks or a weakness may be hidden.
Safety is paramount. Death and destruction is not an option in our opinion.

Wheel Refurbishment
Here at Maldon Shot Blasting we carry out refurbishment on alloy or steel wheels from just a colour change to scuff repairs.
All work is carried out in-house.
Please note: tyres should be removed before we receive them. However, we do offer a removal & refit service in balancing & new valves fitted.
Every surface of the wheel is refurbished Inc the inner rim.
1. Chemically stripped
2. Bead or blast cleaned.
3. Checked for any cracks and damage.
4. Repair if required (at extra cost).
5. 60% Zinc primer or self-healing coat applied on all surfaces
6. Finish coat in any stock colour on all surfaces.
7. Tyre removal & refitting. (At extra cost).
8. 5 year anti corrosion warrantee.
Blast Cleaning Car Body Shells
Blast cleaning is a safe and effective way to remove corrosion, fillers, and tired paintwork. Depending on the body and the materials involved, steel or alloy panel work will determine what media we recommend to the client. If the body is steel, then a standard fine-grade steel grit is the standard choice; a fine glass bead is the best option for alloy bodies. Some areas of the bodywork may not be suitable for blast cleaning, such as roofs, door panels, boot lids, and bonnets. These tend to be weaker and may distort under blasting work. Another point to keep in mind is that previous panel beating work will weaken the said panel, and distortion damage may occur.
We do not recommend acid or chemical dipping as this can have some devastating long-term effects on joints and panels that can't be reached by applying a new protective coat.
Additionally, parts such as suspension/running gear etc, and pipe work should all be removed beforehand,
Underbody work
Some underseals and stone chip coatings can be very problematic to remove by blast cleaning. Having said that, if any corrosion is hiding under these coats, then the blasting will find the weak areas and remove the sealer. Where it is holding firm, then there really is no need to remove it unless the client prefers to do so. This tends to take a fair amount of time and media to carry out and will reflect in the final cost.
Zinc metalistion
This is probably the best protection available; being a 99.9% pure zinc hot coat applied with a power ark machine lays down a heavy zinc coat, offering the next best thing to hot dip galvanising without the risk of heat distortion or unwanted zinc deposit build-up. https://ctc-powder-coating.co.uk/metallisation/anti-corrosive-pure-zinc-metallisation-coating/
Once applied, a further prime coat of your choice will seal in the zinc finish completely. Please be aware that the zinc finish will have a light texture; this is a great option for good adhesion to further paint coatings.
Primer work
MSB offer two types of primer (or you can supply us with your preferred choice)
A standard grey epoxy primer is applied to all reachable parts of the shell, and a black phosphate primer has proven to be a very effective protection for long-term projects. Please see this link for further information.

Superior Zinc Coat Protection – Metallisation
We would like to bring to your attention our Metallisation pure zinc coating, which offers superior protection for car bodies after blasting, comparable only to hot-dip galvanising. This protective quality is further enhanced by incorporating black phosphate.
Our coating can be applied to suspension, underbody, inner floor pans, engine bays, and any steel parts vulnerable to corrosion and wear.
After blast cleaning and preparation, this pure zinc coating is applied using a thermal Arc spray gun, which delivers molten pure zinc to the prepared surface. You can see this process in action below

Primers and Polyester coatings.
Suspension parts, wheels, interior items, again all parts are subject to our preparation and high quality finishing. For moving parts and or parts that are subject to stone chips we would recommend Plascoat®, this finish is very flexible and resistant not only to stone chipping it also has very good properties against most oil base fluids and chemicals.
Plascoat coating materials for automotive applications
Plascoat PPA 571, PPA 571H and Talisman 30 can be used in a variety of automotive applications, as chassis, suspension and general under body parts. Thermoplastic coatings offer a thick protective layer to the metal and are often used either to protect the underlying e-coat from chip or impact damage or to provide a “cushion” effect for parts that are in contact with each other.
In addition Talisman 30 offers an attractive tough satin finish and is used for the coating of items such as light protectors and lever grips.
Plascoat coating powders will usually pass all standard chip resistance tests (e.g. using SAE J400) at a thickness of between 300 and 500 microns. In addition, of course, they provide excellent corrosion protection from salt, UV and water.

OTHER FINISHES
Lacquered Finishes
Under normal circumstances lacquer is not necessary when a high quality powder is used, in-fact it can have the following affects on some colours if a standard polyester finish is used. It can dull most silver finishes to a grey; it may crack or craze and also in some cases lift. We have overcome this problem by using a formulation of special powders to our specification.
Chrome Finishes
Some are now promoting Chrome silver powders that look brilliant but beware the very nature of the make up off this product is a very soft finish and marks even by rubbing it with a finger; it also hates U.V light and will turn grey within months unless protected by our special lacquer finish.

Pitfalls you should be aware of
There are Wheel refurbishes that offer outstanding work and value for money and others that don't really make the grade, with this in mind, you really should ask how they go about there work and what guarantee they offer. For instance, I have come across companies offering this service that only refurbish the wheel face, not removing the tyres or valves and will charge around £45.00 each. Furthermore, they will make further charges for blast cleaning. Others in mobile vans, again a quick rub down with wet and dry media and then wet paint the face without removing the tyre does not make the grade and again charges are around £45.00 to be honest they will not last much more than a year.
Our mind set is to carry out the work and it should be and to make a fair and reasonable charge and by carrying out the work in this way we can offer you up to a 5 year guarantee on corrosion or paint lift.
